And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?
When Joram saw Jehu coming, he called out, 'Do you come in peace, Jehu?' But Jehu answered back, 'How can there be peace as long as your mother Jezebel continues her idol worship and occult practices?'
Jehu is telling King Joram that there can be no peace in the kingdom while his mother Jezebel continues leading the people into false religion and evil practices.
📚 Historical Context
In the 9th century BC, during the divided kingdom of Israel, King Joram was ruling in Samaria when Jehu, a military commander, was anointed by a prophet to overthrow the wicked house of Ahab as part of God's judgment on their idolatry. Jezebel, Ahab's wife and Joram's mother, was notorious for promoting Baal worship and leading the nation into spiritual unfaithfulness, which Jehu references in his response as "whoredoms" and "witchcrafts" to highlight the moral and religious corruption. This confrontation occurs amid a violent uprising foretold by the prophets, underscoring God's use of human agents to enforce divine justice.
